Overland Models offered them quite some years ago, in both 2-Rail and 3-Rail. Naturally they were full O scale models. Just a guess, about the total production; under a hundred and sold for about $1000.
But to directly answer your question; yes someone knows how many were made, and that someone would be Brian Marsh, owner of Overland Models Inc.
I was interested in the Lionel cars

Guess I never realized that Lionel ever made a "Presidents Car", i.e. the Ferdinand Magellan. Then again, you didn't state that.
Lionel did make Eisenhower's campaign car. I think back during the MPC era. It is a heavy weight car dressed in all the red white and blue bunting.
I actually own one made for 027. I think I still have it. I've only run it a few times. Its not all that well detailed and certainly does not hold a candle to the Overland Ferdinand Magellan.
Lionel MPC made baby Madison election cars sometime in the 70's. I think they also made some more recently.
If were talking about the recent Lionel USA made Presidents box cars, then the answer is 18. A search for "USA Presidents" on lionel.com will find all of them.

Also Roosevelt and Truman campaign cars in 1976.
But I think the original poster was referring to these.
What, me worry?

There is another one that was never publicized as such. MTH did a version of the Private Car Georgia 300.
Georgia 300 was pulled by Amtrak Genesis 44 on the last Inauguration Day from Delaware to DC with the first family and thier guests. The figures are even wearing the proper clothing. Aretha Franklin is wearing the outfit she wore when she sang at the inauguration.
Seal of POTUS.
President elect and first family.
Aretha and her show stealing wild hat on the corridor side.
The car has been used by Presidents Clinton, and George HW Bush as well as Candidate Kerry. The owner of the Ferdinand Magellan claims that it is too fragile to be used currently.

That looks great. How did this one come to market? Uncatalogued? Club car?
Thanks!

It was catalogued. But it was not pointed out what the car was in the catalog copy. I have seen the real car in person on the back of an Amtrak train and I admired it then. I also remember its use as the Inaugural train as well (as the nerdy engine number corespondency to the number of the Presidency).
When I got the car the fact that it had both the Presidential Seal tail sign and the custom figures inside was a very cool little bonus because those features were not pointed out in the Catalog. The current MTH site calls it the Obama Inaugural car but in the catalog I only remember the Georgia 300 name with the tiny thumbnail pic

Silverlake - I own the Obama inaugural car as well! I actually found figures that resemble the President, Vice - President, and First Lady. I have them standing on the back porch of the car. I'll have to take a photo and post it.
The original OP was inquiring about Lionel cars so I didn't give this MTH car a thought. I'm glad you did!
The real FM might be fragile to travel, but it may have another problem. IT IS THE HEAVYWEIGHT OF THE HEAVYWEIGHTS! Truck issues?
Or could it be the OP was talking about the President boxcars that Lionel made in the US?

Thanks Silver Lake! That is one sharp looking car.
