I picked up what I think is a 1935 or 1936 Automatic Gateman.  It is stamped on the bottom 45.  It has the chimney and aluminum painted sign pole.  The diamond sign is missing though.  Does anyone know what the wording on the sign was for 1935 or 1936? I had read that the wording changed over time.

Thanks

Scott

I have an early 1935-36 Gateman and the wording on the sign is as follows:  "Railroad crossing" across the middle while the words "Look Out For Locomotive" are around the perimeter of the diamond. The word "the" before  the word locomotive was not included in the early version; that came later with the solid pole.   The sign pole then should not be solid if it is an early version.  The early version's pole had what I would call a ventilated rib pole.  Here is a photo of the 35-36 version.A99D431D-2E94-4AD8-837F-AC0F3C1F8A87

Excellent.  Thank you for the info and pics.  Mine has the solid pole and looks exactly like the one Robert posted.  I thought since it was stamped 45 rather than 45N it was the 1935/36 version.  It is pretty rough but I tested it and it works.  Mine must be a bit later with the solid pole painted aluminum color.
