I have been wanting to reproduce one of these for a while so now I am starting on a #177 scenic display. Some good pictures from a recent auction allowed me to discern construction techniques on this item. I have seen it done before but always with modern materials (foam for mountains etc.) I will make with original construction using sheet tin for mountains and a water basin under the bridges to hold water. Also will sacrifice a couple original std. gauge tunnels for their portals. Here are pics of original piece and will post as I move through this reproduction

Hardest thing so far is finding tinned sheet metal of proper thickness and size. Typically find in hobby shops in 4" x 10" sheets or there about and lionel used larger sheets. But think I have a source now and hopefully start mocking it up this week!!
COOL!
I thought about using building flashing for the sheet metal.
It is thin and flexible, and comes on rolls to minimize seams.
Also aluminum does not rust, and copper was used on some model train tunnels.
The flashing doesn’t have enough body to it. I’m going to use a 28 to 29 gauge tinplated sheet metal. I have metal for me equipment out of my shop.
The base for this is also an odd size 78 x 57”. Probably back when they had 5 x 9 sheets of plywood. I’ll have to glue a couple of these with butt glue and biscuits To duplicate the size of the sheets.
Rick, question for you. Are you planning on running Standard or O or perhaps both? Thanks
John
Will run both as the original display was made O above and std below on the 177 display
Looking forward to seeing your progress, especially the mountains. I have wanted to try something similar. Thanks for posting,
Bob
Can't believe Menards didn't have biscuit router bits so have to find this before next step in construction as the table is 78" by 57". Will try Lowes today, if not will get off line. I have the skeleton of the layout drawn out and making patterns for O gauge bridge and got the sacrificial Std gauge tunnels for their portals just like on original!
Did I miscount, or are there 3 portals? One at each end, and one in the back corner for tunnel derailment access?
Finally getting started on the prewar layout 177 and it seems so large. But glued 2 sheets of plywood together to get the 78x57" dimension and now will layout track and make upper frame for O gauge layout. Will get some pictures posted this weekend. ALso considering reproing this AF shelving for sale if any interest. Would not do for my selfas I collect Lionel. ANy interest in getting one let me know
