I just purchased this Trolley from Frank Davanzo, they were made by his parents in the 1970's -80's.  They called it the "404", it's a stretched version of the Lionel 101 open summer trolley.  It's 21 inches long.

The trolley came to me as an unfinished factory piece, primed, ready to paint.  Mine also has the trucks on it, one powered with a Pride Lines open frame motor.

What I'm looking for is ideas on painting it.  I'm leaning toward the blue and white paint scheme of the Lionel 101 trolley, it's a color there isn't much of on the layout.  But here's the kicker: the roof slide, on top of the clerestory, is gold plated.  I thought it was brass and mentioned it to Frank, he set me straight.  So... no paint for that, and the rest of the colors should go with it to set it off.  The rest of the roof on mine is primed, although it looks shiny in the photo. The seat backs also came with it, they pop in easily after painting.

So, any ideas?

Deep navy blue would be dynamite for the roof next to the gold. I might set that off with white for the uprights and maybe the ends of the seats, and perhaps bright red or blue on the chassis. Dark forest green would also go well with gold. The key is to do the rest of the roof in a dark, saturated, contrasting color that would bring out the gold and then do the rest of the color scheme to coordinate with the roof. Don't ruin it with anything bland or pastel.

Oh, and figure on having to replace the motor sooner or later. Most Pride Lines motors are junk.

SWHi, thanks, good ideas.  I'll be looking for a blue that is darker and more saturated than the blue of the Lionel trolleys.

The roof is a separate piece, but the rest of the car is one piece and doesn't come apart - at least not without much bending of tabs which I'm reluctant to do.  So I might paint the roof the deep blue, the car body all white, and then mask off to bring in the blue again, either as a stripe along the bottom or for the seat ends.  Something like that.

The other problem with the Pride Lines power truck is the large gear on the drive wheel - it has trouble going through tinplate switches, just like the Lionel originals.  It's a brand new motor and trucks, but if I'm going to run it on the layout I'm going to have to do something different.

Brian, great photos.  Who needs air conditioning?  I like the telegraph poles floating up in the air too.  Maroon is a good idea, it would be another color that would go with the gold.

Pappy, especially since it's a new motor, I'll put it together as is for now.  I want to check the new Ross standard gauge switches to see if it goes thru them easier.  I won't do anything drastic right away.

It does occur to me however that a McCoy powered truck, like on the Wappid Wabbit and the Pacific Northwest Interurban (which have no troubles in switches), could be swapped out with the Pride trucks with no ill effects to the trolley... save the Pride trucks to put back on if ever needed to.

Here's some photos of the #404, painted in Derusto deep blue and Navajo white.

Next York, I'll see if Joyce Davanzo has any Pride Lines seated lead figures the right size. Meanwhile, these older lead figures are about right.

It's a little rough going through switches, but otherwise it runs great.

Greetings ... I have 2 pair (powered and trailer) of the Pride Lines 404s. One pair is original in the box with a slew of people on board. It looks GREAT. I'll see if I can get some pictures up. The other pair were not painted, without power unit. I had them professionally painted but am disappointed in the older Lionel green color with yellow. The guy then stuck on 303 decals as its number.... Back in storage they went... while I look for motors to install (have 1 but need 2). I also own 3 interurbans by Pride Lines (2 blue & 1 green). They are excellent.. Anyway, I hope you can get them painted by a person who really knows how and have the correct decals put one.. greg
