I just bought a new sealed in the box Lionel Continental Limited set from 1982. I am trying to get the engine some break in time, but the e unit just seems to drop in to neutral at will. Any ideas as to how to fix this. I am not very familiar with mechanical e units. Thanks.

The usual reason for the E-Unit cycle is power interruptions. Check wiring and track pickups first.
I suggest cleaning the drive wheels too.
By all means, and don't forget the track.
Don't overlook dirty track,,,,,,,,,,,,,don't clean with steel wool.
I use the green pad, then wipe with sponge on other side of pad.
Last check eunit connections,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,goodluck

I think I found the problem. The torsion spring on the one pick up roller doesn't seem to have any tension left so it is not being pushed down on the rail. Anyone know where I can find an exploded parts diagram for this SD24? I also need a new nylon cab light socket. Thanks.

Mr. Cleaver should have those parts.
Henning's Trains, a forum sponsor, has E-Unit rebuild kits, as well as the other parts.

The 8352-320 2-wire lamp socket is about $1 at most parts suppliers.
BradFish1,
Might I suggest installing another pickup roller? Most power units have two. It should be an easy fix. I'd contact one of the crew at, Hennings Trains. Harry #2 can take care of you. He helped me out on a few of my prewar engines.
God Bless,
