I have a Sunset/3rd Rail  engine that is giving me trouble after replacing a troublesome sound board.

Long thread about is is. here

But the gist is:

Engine will move ONLY if the DCS controller is in REL mode.

Any idea what would cause that?

My Legacy CAB-2 remote is broken. So the engine has been configured ONLY with the DCS. The Legacy base is not broken and is connected to the TIU with an MTH 1032 cable.

Other TMCC engines are running fine . . . and need not have the DCS remote in REL mode.

Symptoms are that the engine seems improperly, or incompletely configured. It starts as soon as track power is applied and will not shut down until track power is removed. But it runs beautifully in REL mode. Chuffs well. Idle sounds are fine. But no whistle and no bell sounds. I can see the light flash on the legacy command base when the whistle and bell buttons are depressed on the DCS remote but there is no bell or whistle sound from the engine. Track is connected to the TIU Fixed Out terminals so track voltage is a constant 18v. But the engine moves beautifully as the DCS thumbwheel is rotated. It does not take off at high speed as a conventional engine would at high, fixed track voltage.

Electronics are a brand new Railsounds board from ERR and an older Cruise Commander v. 4.1 board. Prior to replacing the sound board, the engine ran as a properly configured TMCC locomotive but I had never tried it with the DCS, only with Legacy CAB-2. With my CAB-2 being broken, I can't check how the engine would run under Legacy control. The sound board was producing frequent drop outs. But there were bell and whistle sounds. The drop outs are gone with the new board. But so are the bell/whistle. Other sounds are fine.

I feel an answer to ,"Why is this engine running ONLY with the DCS remote in REL mode?" might be a clue.  The whole thread probably was more appropriate to the DCS forum than to the Legacy forum in the first place. Apologies for creating more traffic than necessary but I want to be sure the DCS people get a look at it.

That lets me out... We actually have that engine but usually  run it with a cab-1  I'm sure you tried  the  soft-key SPD ( Speed steps) . No luck with 128? I don't believe you can really reset the board (code etc) with a dcs remote. No set button.

REL (for relative speed steps rather than actual speed steps) is required for certain TMCC engines that use a particular form of speed control. Your Cruise Commander board seems to fall into that group. There's nothing unusual about this.

Regarding any issues with sound, that is most likely a TMCC-type problem and may need configuration of the ERR board itself.
