I'm fairly new to the hobbyand this board. As a matter of fact, this is my first post. I've got MTH engines including diesel and steam, but my problem lies with the DCS remote. The only function I can't get to work is the mic dispatch. I push and hold the button, hear the static, but when I speak into the mike....nothing....no voice at all. I've tried this on both MTH steam (PS3) and a premiere GP 60M diesel (PS2) with no luck...I've connected fixed voltage in and out on the TIU as per MTH instructions. Any guesses?

The Mic will only talk through the engine that is the active engine in the LCD window on the ENG screen. The engine must be getting power and must be stated up.
Yes, I understand that. I've tried with only one engine on the track at a time in both idle and running stages. Engine is powered up. I've also replaced the batteries in the remote. I do hear the radio static that is supposed to be normal and "dispatch" does display on the lcd window when I push the button, but no voice....I have the updated 4.2 software...
Erie: I use an external mic but have tried using the remote's too. What I found, and quickly came to dislike, is that you have to almost swallow the remote for your voice to go thru. OK, swallow might be a tough word - but you have to have the remote's mic right up against your mouth.
Try that.

I agree with Walt, I can't remember if there's on/off feature.
Thanks for your suggestions, guys. I did take Walt's advise and practically swallowed the remote as well....can't hear anything but the static and carrier on and off sounds. Just bugs me I can't get it to work! It is and off/on button which you are suppose to hold down when you use it. Haven't tried the external mic yet....really didn't want to hassle with the wireless mic routine...does it work well Walt?
I use a corded/plug-in mic - it plugs into the side of the TIU.
One other thing. I don't recall which works better for me but it's easy for you to try. There is Proto-Dispatch and Proto-(something else). One doesn't get good results. But one does give excellent results. Whether it's the "right" one by the book or not, who cares, right?
I don't recall if you have an option when using the remote's mic. if you do, try the 'other one'.

Thanks for the tip Walt...I'll try the external mic route for fun. Meanwhile, back to my original problem; all I can think is that it's either a bad internal mike or an AM frequency problem....it's not operational in that I don't think I'm doing anything wrong.
One other thought Erie: when you invoke Proto-(whatever it's called) don't you have to select which mic you will be using???? maybe you're getting nothing but static because the system thinks you're using some other mic other than the remote????

Walt,
don't you have to select which mic you will be using????
No, you do not.
Barry's right...it's a simple push and hold button and nothing else.....the only menu item on the DCS is an external mic setting for when you hook directly into the TIU, as you well know...only thing I can figure is a bad mike in the remote...
Also need a good track signal.
Walt,
don't you have to select which mic you will be using????
No, you do not.
One of the hazards of going by memory, not having the equipment out to check first.
sorry.

I too have noticed the built in Mic is not very sensitive.
