problems with mth 10 wheeler ps2

I just got a mth ps2 10 wheeler for Christmas (1860 style steamer with diamond stack)  The engine only has 1 pickup roller and stops frequently on track. My other ps2 engines don't have an issue.  I changed the battery and checked all my connections.  If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.
