I have an MTH CSX SD70 diesel on which I recently had the ditch lights repaired. by a competent shop.  The engine ran fine for a while, but the last few days it seems to short out the transformer brick (running on DCS) after just a few inches of travel.  Upon placing a completely different engine on the same track, everything runs as normal.  I cannot see anything that would cause a short, even after taking the shell off the engine.  Any other hints?

what is the engine item number? Also is that a PS 2 or PS 3 ENGINE, the item number will identify which engine it is ! have you taken the cover off of the engine? if it is a PS 2 engine unplug the back and red wire connector on the PS 2 board and see if the shorts goes away the connector is behind the 3 capacitors . then power up if the short is gone your board is bad but could possibly be repaired!

send me an email maybe I can help you with your engine item number!

Your engine is PS-2 3V.  Check closely to make sure no pinched wires, motor leads touching chassis, etc...  Especially the purple wire for lights and couplers.

You can pull the 7 pin connector out and power up the track, if you still have a short then the issue is the pickup wires from the trucks that feed AC power to the PS-2 board.

If no short, reinstall 7 pin and remove 4, 5, 8, 12 pin and apply power.  If it shorts the board has an issue and needs to be tested/repaired.  If no short, add back connectors one at a time starting with 12 pin so you can hear sounds.  Once you fine the plug causing shorting, we can isolate further.

When you add or remove plugs, do this with power off.  Don't plug anything in while board energized.   G
