I have a layout with minimum 072 curves and switches (fastrack), powered by four 180 watt bricks, and with Legacy control. I’ve been having problems with my smaller engines like the S2 switcher and some of the F3s having flickering lights and even power loss.  However, if I run larger engines on the same tracks there is no loss of power or flickering lights, in fact with the bigger engines everything seems great.  I have cleaned track, tested track, and replaced track to no avail.  I am getting pretty frustrated.  Any suggestions?

Thanks so much,

Ben

I would take a break and check something else... maybe check the rollers... or more specifically, the springs on the rollers.   Lighted passengers/cabooses flickering as well?  When I get stuck (and frustrated) I walk away and/or look in a different direction and far more often than not the I am then able to resolve the issue fairly quickly.

Good Luck!!!

As suggested above, take time to thoroughly clean the rollers AND all the individual wheels. (Some like to use liquids; others a very fine polishing paper or Dremel wheel.)  The smaller engines tend to have the rollers closer together so its not uncommon for engines to stall going over a turnout at very slow speed. Do your smaller engines run OK at high speed?

Thanks guys.  Yes there are some flickers from passenger cars and cabooses but not really any dropouts.  I would say that yes things seem to do better when running at full speed.  The problems seem to occur mostly around switches and at the ends of spurs.  That said, those same problems aren’t occurring with the larger engines.  And those spurs aren’t especially far from where the power connects to the track.  Also, the switcher I was running last night is almost brand new, the rollers and wheels are clean as a whistle.  That said, I will take your very good advice and remain calm and keep tweaking.

Thanks

Ben
