When MTH cancels a two rail version of an engine, it seems they don't necessarily cancel the three rail. So how big of a minimum number do they need to proceed with a cataloged engine??(scale wheels).

I doubt there is any active participant here who can accurately answer that question. You can be sure that the folks at MTH "tune in" here, but you can be equally certain that they are not going to respond.
