The Proto-coupler on my MTH premier A5 0-4-0 will not work. I bought it used everything else works. Any suggestions on what could be causing the problem?

Check for a broken solder joint right where the wires connect to the coupler.

What did you put it on? PS-1, PS-2 or 3 engine? What does coupler look like? PS-1 coupler is different and won't work with PS-2 or 3 engines. Wiring, connector, PCB all can be issues beyond a coupler with bad coil. G
It is the coupler that come on the engine. I bought the hole engine used. I’m going to have to take the body off,and check some more. Can I touch two wires from the transformer to the coupler to see if it will open before I take off the body?

What version of Protosound? Do the sounds work?
PS-2 everything works except the front coupler.

I thought you meant you bought a used coupler. Couplers go bad, but more then likely the wire broke off coupler, or is cut somewhere under the shell. Worst case is the board fet is damaged. Can be repaired. G
