Hello all, I am sure that this is an old issue to most of the forum, but it's been an issue that I have for many years.  I bought the MTH Boston & Maine 20-2126-1 used from a friend that I saw it work on his layout but when I tried it on mine; a simple oval using a Lionel ZW transformer with the "bricks", somehow it would not move most of the time.  I would turn the throttle on and off and once in a while it would move but that is when the throttle was at full speed and I had to try to catch it before it ran off the track.  I did some reading up on this problem, changed the battery to a BRC and still no response.  I finally just put it aside for a couple of years until now.  I did purchased a used Z4000 and I turn the power up to about 11 volts for a few minutes to let the BRC charge.  I get two bells and I can hear the engine idle.  When I try to put the engine in foward, it just sits there.  I tried to do any resets but I am not familiar how to do it with the Z4000.

Any suggestions as to my next move?

Bob

You have to get a garbled bell sound to have the reset 18 confirmed.

With the Z-4000 handle off,

Press program.

Use the whistle button to go to 18.

Press select.

The transformer automatically does the voltage up and down until you hear 3 clanks and 3 clinks.

Press select again and you should then hear a garbled bell sound.

Then press Program to finish.

They are still running fine.  The software conflict occurs when a battery is weak and a reset or function is attempted.  Enough voltage for the processor to attempt update, but not enough to finish it right.

The MTH chips reinitialize, or in the event of an ID conflict, it can be cleared.

Bob,  If you can't even come out of reset to get to 2 clinks, there is an issue.  Even without a battery you should be able to get clinks and clanks, since power is never removed.

As John stated, the reset or Make PS set, is only for a specific symptom which is 3 clanks at start up.   G

For many of these, MTH can supply a later version of the chip that doesn't suffer from the 3-clanks lockup for battery issues.  If you have a good battery, a reset should keep it running indefinitely.

I already have a BCR in the engine now but looking back when I first bought it used, I may have had the original battery and I may have tried to switch the direction too quickly before the battery had sufficient charged and may have scrambled the board.  Thanks to all for your expertise and advice, now to find someone to get it back to original working condition.
