I have a Lionel Prr B6b 0-6-0. When I apply power it tries to go but seems that the gears won't fully connect. So I removed the cab and looked carefully while applying power The two gears are engaged but won't turn fully Just holds tight. Removing the motor looks a a real bear to deal with So what could be the problem

This is a 35 year old locomotive so it could be any number of things from dry grease to damaged gears. I don’t know how often it has been serviced in its life but would think it needs to be disassembled, cleaned and examined. This is a really nice locomotive, if you are uncomfortable disassembling it yourself, you should contact one people on the forum who repair Lionel locomotives.
I have this 1989 re-release and it is a good loco. Whether it is my prewar switchers or the 1989 re-release, I would not try to fix the motor and/or the wiring. I've had good success sending my prewar locos to Hennings (a Forum sponsor) @Harry Henning. You can shoot them an email and ask if you can send it to them for repair.

On steam locos, a loose wheel can lock things up due to the side and drive rods. If you do not see anything else, drop the rods off and see if that cures the problem. If it does, check to see if there is a loose wheel or the crank pins are not properly quartered.
