I have done some ten or more up grades, no problem. This one the engine goes forward & reverse, smokes & the coupler works, but I don't get the whistle or bell test tones. Help.

Check and make SURE the speaker leads are not shorted to the frame, sometimes the speaker connection is too close to the speaker frame and they touch. Next, check the volume control position, or if you've jumpered for maximum volume, make sure you used the red and gray wires and left the blue wire free. Finally, load a sound file and see if that brings back the sound.
What is the engine? What sound file did you use?
Marty, it sounds like he hasn't loaded a sound file yet, he mentions the whistle and bell test tones.
did he install a volume pot at all?
The volume was turned down! Call me Tonto! I loaded a sound file. The speed is fast & a infrequent chug. Is the tack reader to far away from tape on the fly-wheel l?

That would be one cause, tach spacing is a fairly critical measurement.
Thanks again John, I moved the tach reader closer to the flywheel. That was it, IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good job. The tach reader should be right around 1mm from the flywheel tape, if it's out by more than about 25-30%, things start to go south.
