have a MTH Penn K4s with PS1 that chuffs erratically at medium and high speed. OK when slow. Any suggestions? What drives the chuff rate on the PS1. I know it's not connected directly to drive train motion and doesn't seem to be driven by voltage either?

Driven by voltage. Do a reset 18, but after the first whistle button press getting the clear bell, press a second time. This resets chuff. Test. G
Hey George, I wish I had know about that second whistle press in my Proto-1 days.
GGG - Thanks for the input. Gave it a try but now the brake sounds come on any time the engine is a little above a crawl and don't go off again until it is slowed back down. I think the chuff problem is still there but hard to tell with all the "screaching" going on! I think it's time for a PS2/3 upgrade?
Something is up. Brake squeal should be opposite. High speed to crawl. Do you have a good battery installed? G
G - I dont think it is the battery but I suppose it is possible. I put a new J&W BCR in the engine about three months ago and it was working fine until I took it off the layout just before Christmas. All the start up and idle sounds are strong and clear, the whistle and bell and engine sounds and brakes are loud and clear and the shut down sequence is also strong and clear and lasts just as long as before.
I'm actually serious about just upgrading to PS2/3. Been thinking about it for several years and I just don't have the time or incentive to keep messing with this PS1 system.
Try reset again, make sure wheel and pickups clean. No frayed motor leads on motor. You can also turn squeal brakes off. G
