I have a beautiful Premier J1e Hudson (MT-3020LP) that is essentially new.  It is a PS1 system.  I would like to upgrade it to DCS (PS2 or PS3).  What options are currently available, any drawbacks (other than cost) and where are the best places to send for this type of conversion.  I have searched but not found a lot of current info.  Thanks in advance.

I converted a PS-1 Premier Blue Comet Pacific about 6 months ago to PS-2. The procedure is the same and it wasn't difficult. This was the first time I had ever attempted something like this. If you decide to do yourself here are a few tips: Make sure the solder joints on the female harness connector are ground down to reduce the profile. This is discussed in the magazine article, I found out the hard way. Don't forget you may have to adjust the air gap between the sensor and the motor flywheel, this is a lot more difficult than described in the instructions. I recommend you measure the gap and purchase an extra sensor already soldered to the proper gap. I ruined my first one and contacted MTH and purchased what I needed. Lastly, make sure you print out the directions in color, instructions will make more sense. If I was successful anyone can do it!

Why not try it yourself. The directions are pretty explicit and the guys here who have done this engine say its pretty straightforward which I would interpret to mean no special modifications required. Some of the forum sponsors supply these kits as well at discount prices. PM me if you want sources other than MTH.

Guys.  Many thanks to all for the good inputs.  This is the best forum I have ever used bar none!!  I especially appreciate all the encouragement to DIY it.  But . . . with all due respect, I'm 71.  My eyesight is getting worse, my hands are not very steady, and I have developed a sever intolerance for problems.  If I were 15 years younger I'd probably give it a shot but for now, it's time for me to pay the piper and have someone do it that has done it before.

Sincerely,

Gene
