When I placed my MTH Railking 2-8-0 on track, the engine would come up in DCS mode, but when I moved the thumbweel on the remote forward, the engine would not move.  After taking off the shell, I pushed the flywheel with my hand, then the engine started to move under it own power with no issue.  After I changed its  direction, the engine once again moved under its own power.  I ran it back and forth a few more times, no issues.

This is all fine and good, but I'm trying to figure out the root cause of the original issue, could it be a bad motor?  This engine has an older PS2 5v board with a 9volt BCR.

Motors that sit a long time unused can develop oxidation on the copper commutator.  Running it probably cleaned it off.  We sprayed non-flammable CRC Lectra-Motive cleaner in the motor slot and then ran the motor.  Usually cleans it right up and lowers the operating current.

One note:  Looks like the tall cap on the board is a "WINCAP" which is known to have problems.  They seem to be OK if used regularly, but can fail for no reason, especially if they sit unused.  May be on borrowed time.

Jon, I’ve heard of 5v boards spontaneously burning up, is this capacitor the reason they go bad?

Another question I have, when I add the engine in the DCS remote, the name of engine does not show up, only shows the address 2.  Any idea what may cause this?
