I thought about posting this to the TMCC/LEGACY board but I have been pestering them to death lately with TPC and SCII problems.  Besides, this is an engine question.  I have a 100% Lionel layout except for 1 MTH, PS2,  B&O 080 freight engine which was a gift.  I have had it for years. Couldn't remember much about it except that I don't think I got it to run at all when I got it.  Today, I opened up the tender and was delighted to find that I had, as I thought I remembered, replaced the nicad battery with a BCR.  I put it on the track, and it performs basic conventional tasks, forward, neutral, reverse, whistle, bell, but no couplers.  The MTH manual and TMCC TPC manual both include un-coupling instructions for PS2 engines.  Both are different; neither works. Can anybody tell me how to get more functions from this engine?

In the TPC 400 Manual on page 19 there is a PS 2 programming sequence.  Try reprogramming.  Control via a Cab-1/TPC 400 is on page 18.  I have had good luck using this programming sequence.  Couplers work with sound, maybe a bit slow on (2) Proto 2 MTH 0-6-0's that I have.  Keep in mind this is still conventional control with a few more added features.  I believe the purpose was to smooth over all the bell, bell, whistle, whistle........... control in conventional.  The TPC does it for you.  A TPC can only handle one conventional locomotive at a time.  It would have to be reprogrammed if another was placed on the track, I think???

Mike,

Your thinking about PS1 with all the Clink, Clank, Clunks, Ding Dong, Ding Dong.

Page 18 tells shows what the buttons are used, pg 19 shows how to program PS1. Your not programming a PS 2 engine just running in conventional with a Cab1 or 2.

Example, (PS1) pressing Aux1, 9 puts track at full power, press 8 and track power is lowered to 30%. This in my opinion is easier then fooling around with the transformer handle and also give walk around control.

Bill, unless I mis-read, he doesn't have DCS, and wants to just run in conventional mode.  If he has the TPC, and he's running on that track in conventional mode, doesn't he get the benefit of being able to open the PS/2 engine couplers using the TPC macro sequences?

I'm just reading the book, as I don't really have a TPC.  But it sure seems to say that you can operate the PS/2 functions using the CAB1 and the TPC in conventional mode.

The two MTH locos I mentioned are PS 2 and they work quite well using the programming instructions on page 19. including the couplers.

I believe you are programming the TPC to accept all the Bell,Bell, Whistle, Whistle, ........... command in conventional mode to the standard keys on the Cab-1 controller. It does a pretty good job, enough so that I was severely criticize when I commented that the TPC could do MTH command operations.  Note that it is still operating conventional.

Bill

In the above post I should have said Cab1 instead of TPC. Also I should have  said if your running PS2  with the Cab 1 all you need to do is press F/R coupler. I assumed since Bob is using a TPC  he has a Cab 1 for control.

First of all, taylorra, what is the catalog number of the MTH locomotive?  We need to make sure it is PS2 or PS1.  If it's PS2, you need to do all the horn and bell timed pushes to open the coupler.  If it's PS1, you put the locomotive in neutral and turn the track voltage up over 14V then push the horn button twice, slowly.

No.  Using a TPC 400/and a Cab 1 the programing sequence on page 19 eliminates the need for all the bell, bell, whistle, whistle ...... commands. The couplers should operate from the coupler buttons on the Cab-1............

From John post above.  Coupler (Proto 2) are noted near the bottom.

Mike,  I think you need to go back and read page 19 again.  That is only for PS-1 and QSI trains.

Bill is correct.

For PS-1 you first need to arm the coupler.  So with voltage high in neutral you press whistle button.  You will hear the coupler arm.  Next time you press the whistle button the coupler will fire regardless of state (F/N/R).  This works via transformer button or Cab-1 for most PS-1s.  The engine MUST BE IN NEUTRAL to arm the coupler thought.

For PS-2, normally the CAB-1 and Power Master or ZW-C would not work using the sequence of bell or whistle.  The Chopped wave and timing of signals doesn't work.

The TPC was designed to work with PS-2, so as Bill says pressing the coupler button will fire the coupler.  On page 18.  G

Note the command chart that John posted Page 18.  Each specific key has a noted PS2 associated with it.   The programming works for Proto Sound 2.

Why, when all you need is to press F/R coupler button. He is using a TPC and Cab1

Mike now we agree.  That is what Bill said earlier.  Page 18 gives you the macro to operate PS-1 and PS-2 command features in conventional.  Not all, but some.

Page 19 is how to use it to do resets on PS-1 and QSI.  By the way the Aux1 8/9 also works for Power Master and CAB-1.  That is how I do my programming for my PS-1 engines with my ZW-c or PM controlled track.  G
