Hi,

Well I have my first command control train on it's way.  I have been fully conventional up to this point.  I bought the PDF of Barry's book and I am slowly working through it.  I will only hook up one loop to command control, so here are my questions.

1. I dont have a controller.  I have not decided if I should just get the Remote Commander for now or spend the money on a Digital Commander and TIU.  Can I run the PS2 loco conventionally without the remote commander or the digital commander with my CW80?  Anything I should be aware of doing this?

2. The PS2 is not set at factory settings.  I asked the seller.  I understand the remote commander will not work unless the PS2 is reset.

3.  Can I use the CW80 to power the digital commander and TIU?

I have all CW 80s.  I have an old TW in good shape, but not in use.  I dont have the funds to get a new transformer if I get the DC and TIU.

Thanks, Ted

The one time I tried a CW-80 with an MTH loco it just sat there and wouldn't move, no response from the whistle or bell buttons either.

Thanks Rick - The manual I downloaded from MHT for the Loco had no transformers listed on that page.  I guess I can hook up my TW for power.

Ted,

Every PS2 or PS3 engine can be oprated conventionally, however, CW80s have a bad reputation as regards MTH locos. Further, MTH does not recommend that the CW80 be used with DCS

Also, FYI, what you are calling a "Digital Commander" is more properly known as the DCS Remote.

That's correct. It must be Factory Reset using either a DCS Remote and TIU, or a DCS Commander.

3.  Can I use the CW80 to power the digital commander and TIU?

I would not recommend doing so.

Ted,

If I use my old TW as the power supply are there any precautions I should take?

As others have said, use fast-blow fuses or circuit breakers in line with the Hot wire between the transformer and the TIU channel input. I use 10 amp fuses.

If I can save a few bucks and get a TIU with the RS 232 port is there any thing to worry about down the road with that TIU?

I'd strongly urge you to spend a little more and get a new, Rev. L TIU, from an authorized MTH dealer, that comes with an MTH warranty.
