I have an early PS2 FEF 4-8-4 and it suddenly stopped after a 5 minute run. Even after I tried to reboot and replace the battery it failed to show any life. Also the clicking noises that accompany the powering up from the transformer are missing. It is probable that the board is fried? I`m a novice at this, I would appreciate any help that might be out there. As an addendum, this is very early PS2 and I am running it in DCS.

Sounds like 5volt board that crashed.
Go to DCS forum like Chris stated.
Schumann,
I feel your pain. I recommend an ASC certified repair person who has recently fixed a dead locomotive for me. His OGR Forum handle is GGG, and his email address is "Gcubed" <gcubed@cox.net>. His name is George.
Same thing, same loco, happened to me. MTH has a 3-volt board available that fits right into the same connectors, but as I recall involves changing the speaker. Not a difficult or complex job, but I beleive board only available through a tech.

Don't give up yet, If the engine is completely dead maybe the pick up wire plug has come unplugged at the main board. Nothing to lose now , open her up. Should be a red' black, and the 3 tack wires on the plug.
I agree with Gregg, I'd look for a power issue, make sure power from the track is making it to the boards.
Check that the tether is completely plugged into the tender.
The FEF has the board in the engine with battery and speaker in the tender, so it should still start up (click) and show lights/smoke even without tender plugged in.
So, you can carefully remove shell and make sure the 7 pin is connected to the board, but becareful with wire management as the board is mounted sideways in the engine.
I have the parts to convert this to a PS-2 3V system. Can test your 5V board, but usually if there is no click in DCS and Conventional, the board has expired. G
These are nice engines and worth repairing. You can e-mail me via my profile. G
