PS2 FT A-B-A set Questions

Only the lead has sounds that I know of. There is a board in the trailing unit to control motors (and maybe smoke?).

Only the lead unit can be used as a single engine. The trailing unit gets it's commands thru the lead.

I have the NYC version.  Only one A unit has a receiver.  You can run it by itself or with the slave A and/or the dummy B.

The locomotive is a smooth runner with no problems.  The slave A unit has smoke, lights, sounds and electro coupler.

DANR, Are you sure about the sound in the trailing A?

Yes, Chuck, both A's have speakers only the B has nothing.

Can the board in the "slave" A unit be swapped for a PS2 board to run independently?

Yes. It will take some rewiring I believe.

No way a PS-2 ABA set has a speaker in the trail A for sounds, and have a slave board, unless some one modified it.  Only newer PS-3 now come as independent AAs with PS-3 boards in both units.

My PS2 F3s do not have a speaker in the slave A unit and are tethered.

My PS3 FTs are independent A units, each having their own sound and speaker. The speaker is a much improved version and sounds much better than the older cheap speakers they used to use.

I would get the PS3 set....better all around

Never mind, George is right (as usual).  Only a speaker in the lead unit.

So I now have a set of 20-2972-1 FT's, the "second" A unit has the slave board.

Still looking for a wiring diagram...

Are there any PS2 upgrade kits floating around to convert  the "slave" unit?  I only find the PS3 upgrade kits on MTH's website.  (part number anyone?) 

In addition, I don't see that the PS3 upgrades kits are available anywhere.
