Ps2 triplex running problem

Triplex with new battery was running great then all of a sudden began having erattic speed control problems. I checked the tender engine connector which seemed tight. Engine is one of the nine volt battery types. What should I check next?

Cleaning rails?

I used to stick a red topped pin into the roadbed anytime there was a problem. 3 pins warranted a full on MOW trip.
