Easier to ask those that know, than to try to dig it up on the web (ask me how I know!)

I have the MTH 20-2230-1 Genisis PS2 engine, cab #801. No charging port on the unit. For other PS2 units, I read that the 2 pin shows a 3V board (the good one) and the round jack shows the 5V board (the bad one)

Mine still works, but without me taking the shell off, to find out> which board does mine have in it from the factory...if someone knows? More curiosity than anything else. I know about my other engines.

Thanks, Greg

Got it, thank you. The only thing wrong with the Genesis so far, is a connector must be loose. I have to tap the cab to get the lights/coupler to work at times. Guess when it goes bad eventually (the board, not the connector - I will open it up sometime soon and fix that) it may not be worth fixing, especially with repair guys having trouble getting new boards. Does MTH stuff run conventionally when the boards go bad....or does it all work as a unit? I remember reading years ago, guys with bad boards change the engine to run conventionally. Another can of worms?

Out of 7 PS2 engines I have, 4 have the 2 pin chargers and are the 3V good boards, and 3 have RND or no charger and must be the 5 v "bad" boards. The Genesis is a PS2 with no external charger. The two with the round charger are a Chessie SW9, and a Chessie Steam Special loco. Maybe I will be lucky and they will all outlast me. They have worked since early 2000 when I needed them to.

Appreciate the time and trouble. Greg (I printed out that parts .pdf in case I ever need it. Thanks, Alan)

Glad this question came up. We just recently loaded 18 different pdf’s onto the MTH Parts and Sales website that show the MTH product number, road name, locomotive type & catalog it appeared in. Along with what version of factory installed electronics it was delivered with. Additionally it shows which part is required to replace the factory installed board. These are pdf’s which means once you open them you can use CTRL F to search the product numer. The lists are created based on the electronic package they were delivered with.

you can find these under “Helpful stuff”

thank you,

Mike Reagan

One comment regarding the exploded view shown as an example. What I typically do, if an exploded view diagram existed in pdf form (think pre-2020) I will use it and assign all the parts to that exploded view (meaning all PS-1, PS-2 & PS-3 mechanical / deco parts with appropriate call out numbers. For instance, take the Premier Big Boy exploded view list. There are I believe 5-6 different part numbers assigned to the trailing truck of the locomotive. Each part labeled as PS-1, PS-2, PS-3. This is because the detail level on these parts changed (got better) each time it was made. Same goes for linkages: nickel, satin, blackened, etc.

where I am going, is I would typically avoid using the exploded view diagram to determine which electronics package the loco was delivered with. Instead, use the “electronic list” to the far right when you land on the search redults page.

once again, the premier genesis was produced with 4 iterations of electronic packages: PS-1, PS-2-5V, PS-2-3V and PS-3. Mechanically speaking, those parts changed very little (aside from brass flywheel motors, striped flywheel motors, PS-1 coil couplers vs PS-2 coil couplers, etc.

Just want everyone to be aware of the insignificsnt things that hsunt my dreams and roll around inside my head everyday!

Thank you,

Mike
