PS3 Upgrade Kit and No Sound

Did you get the service update from MTH on the tach reader wire mixup? on diesel upgrades delivered last week.

Somehow you appear to have the volume shut off.

Bruce:   I have the steam upgrade kit.

I reloaded the sound file again, and no sound.   I don't know what I did wrong.

Sound was the one feature I wanted.

Maybe try a reset?

If you have a meter check continuity from each speaker lead to the 40 pin plug terminals for the speaker (thin yellow and white wires on pins 26 and 28).

Check how many ohms the speaker reads.

If you have a single AA battery, try connecting the wires for a brief second and see if the speaker clicks and moves. Obviously do this when it's unplugged from the board. Don't keep the battery connected too long as it may burn the voice coil. Just a quick tap and release.

I just did a diesel kit and it came with volume and smoke pots already wired. I guess the steam kit doesn't?

Reset?    How do you perform a rest?

i have checked the continuity for each speaker lead - good.

i will try the battery test tomorrow.

Did you test the speaker for resistance?

You can do a feature reset with DCS if the sound got shut off somehow. There's also the DCS factory reset but that deletes it from the remote.

The (conventional) factory reset is done with a transformer directly (no TIU signal)

What PS-3 Sound file did you load?  Did you load flash code too, or just Sound file?

Running in DCS the volume pot is not needed, so that is not the problem, unless something was wired wrong.

i loaded the file for 11-1044-1  AF 4694.

i did not load the flash code, just the sound file.  I thought the flash code was for HO and O gauge engines.   I installed this in a standard gauge.

Other features:   I need to adjust the tack reader (too close to the flywheel).   The engine didn't have a smoke unit, so that's not connected. 

I must have fried the sound board when installing.

I am sad to report that still no sound, even after I loaded the flash as well as the sound file.  I also reset the engine to factory settings.   

I tested the speaker (battery method) and that appears to be fine.

i can only assume that I fried the sound board when I installed the kit.

bummer.....  $212 lost.   Oh well.....

ALAN, You are wrong.  First, I did not say to load flash code.  I asked if he did.  YOU DO NOT load Flash Code in PS-32 Steam kits.  They must use the PS-32 Flash code installed to work properly.  Either way sounds like something is wrong.  G

Pat, did you try going into your menu and under sound, make sure all the individual volume setting are not on zero?

Dave:    Yeah.... all of the sound settings are set at 100%.

i sent the board to GGG this morning for him to look at.

hopefully it's something simple, but I doubt that.  I might have to see if I can find a used board somewhere, or just breakdown and by another kit.

Don't feel bad. I also fried a new board doing an install. Had George install it the second time around cause I could not find why it shorted. It's a learning curve that only helps us be more careful next time around. My hat's off to any repair man here that never blew a new board.

Thanks..... and I was sooooo careful.  I worked on my anti static mat, I followed directions as they applied (I installed everything in the locomotive, instead of the tender).   I fabricated new mounting brackets and speaker housing.  

Oh well.....

I'm guessing the engine added to the dcs remote, just no sound..... Any squawks  if you tried a track signal test?

you might get luck and GGG can replace the audio chip and your back in business!
