Russel,

they have a custom ASIC chip which gives better signal pickup than the old chip.

This means better signal response, more so if paired with the new Rev L TIU which also has a new ASIC.

Actually, the digital signal processors (DSPs)in the PS3 engines and Rev. L TIUs are not ASICS (application-specific integrated circuits), as were the DSPs in the PS2 engines and earlier TIUs.

The PS3 engines and Rev. L TIUs have FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) that are faster than the ASICs, allowing PS3 engines and Rev. L TIUs to "listen" better for commands and acknowledgments.

Jim, The actual difference, which you really after are:

Supercaps installed on board no battery needed.

Runs all LED lights, no bulbs

Loads two files one is the engine characteristics and the other is the sounds.  This provides more flexibility with keeping original engine operating characteristics (speed profile, light features and such), but going with any type of sound.  PS-2 used one files so if you liked a different whistle, you might also get different light characteristics and speed depending on the file used.

PS-3 can load PS-2 sound files

Has DCC and DCS and can pickup DCS signal on either rail automatically.  This allows 2 rail operators to do more.  PS-2 needed a selector switch for 2 rail DCS selection.

A few other things.   G

He asked what the difference are between PS-2 and PS-3.  I did not assume the discussion was specific to PS-3 upgrade kits which don't exist yet.  Who knows what the upgrade will do, there is talk about including LEDs again.

As far as the PS-3 boards though, they support LEDs.  If another board is attached to the PS-3 board to support bulbs, that is a different discussion in my opinion.  G

My apologies, I guess I should have made a new thread.  My original post did have many questions and was all over the place.  Long story short, yes I was just asking about the differences between the two.  I now have an engine that is PS2 and a new engine that is PS3.  Thanks for everyone's response!
