I am in need of several light bulbs for the PW diecast metal street lamps. These are the ones that screw in with small globes. The 1449's looks like it but I cannot be sure. If any of you pros out there know which number I need please do tell me.

If your lamp posts take screw based bulbs you can use either 1447 or 1449 bulbs.
I think 1447 bulbs will burn cooler, so I'd go with them.
Here is the parts list for a #35 lamp post. I cannot think of any other straight Lionel lamp post that use a screw based bulb. It lists a #1447 (1447-330) bulb.
I have seen my share of #35 lamp posts with melted globes (lens).
I think there were two die cast listings......a #35 and a #71. The 71 shows a 363-300. Which lamp do you have?
Roger
The #71 lamp post uses a bayonet based bulb. While Lionel may have specified a #363 bulb, I don't think I'd use one there. A #363 bulb is going to generate more heat that a #1445 or #53 bulb. I guess I would go with a #53.
Melted covers are fairly common on the #71 lamp post too.
I think that the only place I'd use a 363 bulb is in the 455 oil derrick. The extra heat is desirable for the bubbling.
Lionel did spec the 363 on the 1959 parts list for the derrick.
How are you concluding the heat output?
I figure that heat output is relative to power consumption at a given voltage.
The chart I have handy says a 363 is .20 amps at 14 volts, and a 1445 is .15 amps at 18 volts. So the 1445 will burn cooler at any given voltage.
The 3-60 Lionel bulb chart gives the #53 as .10 amp at 12-16 volts. A random site gives the specs on the #53 as .12 amp at 14.4 volts. So a #53 is also cooler than a #363.
It is less clear to me whether a 1445 or 53 will burn cooler because I have been told that the amperage consumption of a light bulb is not linear as the voltage increases.
I have read material here and there had agrees with my supposition. Did I draw a wrong conclusion?
I have found out the bulbs I need are the 1447, they are 18 volts less bright but also less heat. The new repro lamp shades are vented also so I think it will be fine. Thanks for all the help.
