Has anyone used this small board (QRE1113) from SparkFun for train presence sensing? It's $2.95 and I do know that I can get the IR transmitter/receiver for about half that but with a board it seems most convenient for an application I'm considering. Since it has a digital compatible output it should be compatible with Arduino.
If you've used this what was your experience? Should I consider a better option? Thanks much.

The QRE1113 is VERY sensitive to distance, and it's operating distance is 1mm. It's not at all suitable for this task. FWIW, I use it on my Chuff-Generator, that's the kind of application it's used in.
i'd like sensing and data injecting, like the fastrack sensor track. maybe they use 2 leds.
Okay then, nice to know. GRJ is there anything else you would suggest that may yield a digital I/O compatible output (0 or 5 volts)?
See the link Severn posted above. I believe the original poster has had success with the Sharp sensors he links to in the thread. They are about double the price of the Sparkfun sensors.
The Sharp GP2A200LCS0F Reflective Optical Switch looks like a good choice. It's the one mentioned in the other thread.
