I have a Menards American Power and Light building that I purchased several years ago and the lights worked as they should for a while (maybe 2 to 3 hours total).  The sign and the two red lights still work but the white lights have all gone out.  There are  three red and black set of wires that go up into the building. one goes all the way to the two red lights and that one still works.  The other two have a device wired in line that appears to be about the size of a small diode or resistor.  These devices seem to have gotten over heated and are burnt and melted to the other lead.

Does anyone know what these devices are and is it possible with the 19 LED's wired to them that they were sized too small.  What remains of the device measures about .085 x .230 inches.

Does anyone know what these devices might be and what I should try to replace them with.

I appreciate your help!

thanks,

Don

If the failed part was bad at the start , when it failed it only stopped power to those led connected to it. (like a fuse)

The other red leds were on a different circuit so did not fail.

I would replace the failed parts with a 1 amp diode and a power limiting resistor in series.

I would try different resistor values starting at 1k.

Use the highest value that will still light the leds at the wanted brightness.

I have the same building and I am concerned about what I should power it with. I also feel due to poor design of the the power supply that menards should be replacing the building and power supply if in fact their power fried the electronics on a $100 building.

I really like their accessories, however, this concerns me and makes me reluctant to purchase any more of their buildings.

I have this building, and power it using a Lionel ZW AC Transformer, through an AC to DC Adjustable Buck Converter.  I run it at 3.5 volts DC  (1 volt DC lower than the recommended), and it has been fine for 3+ years so far.

Same is true for all of my Menards buildings- Menard's Hobby Shop, York Hotel, Menard's Feed and Seed, and Dakota Cabinet Factory.  All run at various voltages (never more than the recommended) using one or a shared buck converter.

How to use a Buck Converter file attached.
