I hope one of you can help me with this. I have a Lionel 2-Truck Shay (the elusive “P. Bunyan Lumber” version) made three or four years ago. It was described as running on 036 curves and up and since I use 036 FastTrack, I bought the loco. It does, indeed, navigate the 036 curves OK.

This year, Lionel catalogued more 2-Truck Shays. I am interested in one of them. But now Lionel says that 042 curves are required for use.

So I am wondering if there has been some change in the design of this model since the one I previously bought which now makes 042 track necessary for the 2020 model rather than 036?

So, I am asking if any of you have one of the new Shays from this year (2020) and if you would be willing to try your model on an 036 curve if you have one available to you?  I have written to Lionel to ask about this but who knows if I will get a response from them .

If anyone can do me a favor and check on this matter, I sure would appreciate it . And “thanks in advance”!

This is like the scale Mikados, which have been listed as O36, O42, and O54, depending on where you look (I think I even saw one listed as O72 at one point.).  I have run mine on O36 just fine.

With the Shays I believe they are the old K-Line tooling, which out of the box will run O36, but not pull most cars without derailing them.  K-Line included a coupler adaptor in the box to allow you to pull cars on O36 that you had to install.  Lionel did not include it but still listed the Shays as O36.  Once people starting having issues the Shay got bumped up to O42.  If you can find the old K-Line adaptor, it works on the old Lionel Shays, but I can't speak of the current ones.

So the short of it is that the locomotive will probably run on the O36 just fine, it just may not be able to pull any cars behind it.
