I run 3 rail, high rail wheels, but I have finally found an engine I have been looking for, but it is 2R/3R scale wheels.  I understand it will have a fixed pilot (which I don't mind) But what else needs to be done to make it run on my set up?  I realize there is a switch for 3R, but does it have the pick up rollers?  And will the scale wheels need to be changed?  if so what is that process?

Thanks

Bill

I have an MTH Russian Decapod that is 2/3  There is isolation left and right which is 2 rail.  Tender pick-up is designed  to use the left and right tender wheels for pickup.    The third rail  pickup can be added or removed.  I have a three rail layout.

Tender switches.

Installed third rail pick-up.  Note the isolation bushings between the axle and the wheel.

Wiper isolation detail

There are also isolation bushings/ the truck bearings.

Non isolated side.

Left and right isolation allows for two rail pick-up.  Front tender truck/right rail.  Rear tender truck/left rail.

The design allowed MTH, at the time, to produce both 2rail and 3rail locomotives with one assembly line.   Picture of the Russian Decapod.

20-89008 Four Wheel truck Hi-Rail wheel set $39.95

I looked at these but am a little confused.  The description says:

Convert your Hi-Rail Wheel equipped diesel locomotive power trucks to a Scale Wheeled version. Requires a Proto-Scale 3-2T power truck (sold with 2006 and later models only).

But I want to do just the opposite. I have a two rail scale wheeled unit I want to convert to 3rail hi-rail.  Is this what I need?

Yes. That part number is for the Hi-Rail wheel sets. I know the catalog says what you wrote but that is if you have a locomotive where the part number ends in -1 and you want the scale wheels to run on 2 rail track. You have a locomotive that the part number ends in -2 so your locomotive already has the scale wheels. You need the Hi-Rail wheels. I got the information from page 150 of the 2020 Vol 2 catalog.
