I just received my new Southern Pacific crane car and in the process of re-railing a car I noticed that the boom says Bucyrus Eric. Was this a misprint or was it done for license issues? Should read Bucyrus Erie? I have attached a pic. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Interesting misspelling, for several reasons. Lionel clearly has a license to use the Bucyrus Erie name - they've used it many times over many decades. Their new gantry crane on p. 154 of the 2016 Signature catalog shows "Bucyrus Erie" signage on the side of that crane cab, for example.
At first glance, the wrecker crane error seems likely to be another Chinese production spelling error, but there's something else. In the 2016 Signature catalog, on p. 82, which shows the SP crane car, the picture of the crane shows Bucyrus Eric printed on the boom in the catalog picture. So, perhaps the error was Lionel's, and the production drawing that Lionel gave to the Chinese manufacturer had the error.
(I thought it might be a fantasy paint scheme, but indeed there was a Daylight painted wrecking crane.)
BREEZINUP thanks for the info, that's just my luck to get the one with the misprint!!! Nothing I can't fix. Just wondering if the Southern Pacific crane was the only road name that was affected with this misprint in this last round of releases? Thanks again.
What is misprinted? The railroad would have to letter the car for the RR and they may have ordered or painted the cab to their road colors, but why take the manufacturers' name off of the boom? Ok, a lot of rr's did it, but I always thought it was a name synonymous with "Big Crane"
Here's a steam crane converted to diesel in NJ from the Erie Lackawanna RR.

Not bashing Lionel but things like this should not get past quality control, if there is such a thing.
Well, I have this crane too and did not notice the mistake until I saw this post! The lettering is quite small but this clanger joins the "Huckleberry Fin" (as in shark's) one on the Legacy Mark Twain Zephyr from a few years back.
Neither is so obvious that it makes a great difference to me but you wonder how these things get past inspection of production samples.
Fortunately with the crane it looks like you can just repaint the "C" as "E" if it really bugs you.
I see - Eric Close the C with a silver fine tip sharpie
LOL, definately one of the funnier errors, preordering and the BTO hype is dwindling by the minute.
I hope Eric Siegel will be reviewing one of these, I bet he'll be ecstatic about it!
.....Bucyrus Eric....hee hee.
Almost as funny as my milk car with Grade "nothing" Milk on the side
..Bucyrus Eric....... and to think somebody on another thread stated Lionel has QA checks in place

There have been quite a number of errors over the years, and far worse than the little Eric error. Here are just a couple:
Many will remember one of the classic errors that drew widespead attention a number of years ago - the MTH steam engine, a well known engine, with large lettering on it that was supposed to say Merrimac - instead it read Merrmac. MTH lost a lot of sales with that one.
Here's a fairly recent one. Note the zeros instead of the letters "OO" in the "SOO" lettering on these recent MTH F units. Ruined the engines, in my opinion. It's prominent enough that once you see it, it sticks out every time you look at it, and ends up being too irritating to have.
Another case of the orientals not fully understanding the english language.
Hey, I think I'll tell Eric Siegel that they named these cranes after him! (BTW, autocorrect wanted to spell "cranes" as something else, which makes me wonder whether THAT is the real source of this clanging error = "Erie" recognized as "Eric" when the decals were printed.)

"Orientals?"
