I have some questions about the Lionel corp. tinplate 262E (11-6023-1). I am getting one very soon and would like to know some things about them.

Are all of the locomotive wheels black?

Is it a good locomotive to buy?

How small is it?

What coaches would it pull?

And, would it navigate O-27 curves?

That's great news Lionel2056.
Yes, the modern 262e ought to work well at pulling your cars.
The loco comes with traction tires though it is pretty solid and heavy.
Unsure of proportions, but hey, its tinplate!
The one thing I can think of to look at closely is the coupler on the tender.
Original Ives passenger cars used different couplers than Lionel.
You may need to get an Ives coupler to swap out on the tender to pull you Ives consist.
The parts are available. Before you head home with your new loco...
Open the box at the hobby shop and try connecting one of your Ives cars.
That way you can get/order the part and eliminate disappointment at home.

The standard gauge locos are packed with an extra coupler for Ives. But that is a different league given the price points.

Enjoy your new loco and post some pictures!

Oh, and have the hobby shop person lube it up for you so you can learn about maintenance for it.
A long life for you to enjoy and perhaps, pass down to your kids/grandkids. Just make sure you share that dream with your folks so they know to keep it for you for the years to come.

Good choice...you are going to love it.  This is the locomotive that got me interested in Tinplate.  Nice little loco with lots of character.

I too picked the 11-6023-1 with nickel trim.  It has black spoke drivers with red pilot and trailing truck wheels.  I purchased the three car set of blue/silver cars that it was shown with in the catalog...item 11-80025.

I still need to do a video of the my set.

Here is a shot of mine...

I got one because my father has an original 262. I love it. It's brass trim so it has red wheels. As far as passenger cars go, I bought what I believe to be 600 series because frankly that's all I could afford at the time. Figuring it's tinplate, and there aren't hard and fast rules, I wasn't too worried, and I think they look ok with the 262. But if you can afford the larger cars, you may want to go that route.

I got my 262E now. It has all black wheels (the drivers and bogeys are black) and the paint is just beautiful! I haven't managed to turn the smoke on yet or set the volume to full as I usually do with sound-equipped engines. The whistle is LOUD, but it sounds cool! I am very happy with my purchase.

I was able to change the coupler to an Ives coupler and it is at the same height as an Ives car. All I had to do was loosen the screw, remove the latch coupler, add the Ives coupler, and place the screw back in place and tighten it. Then, I was done. It worked perfectly and no harm was done to the tender.
