Questions on Tweaking Lionel Maritime Set 6- 30187 with Pics

Well I came by this set and have the following 2 questions:

This is a simple RTR Conventional set. The sounds are quite good.

1) The stock smoke resistor is 20 ohm but it has that darn ceramic coating on it. Smokes poorly if at all. I put in a 16 ohm MTH resistor and although a little better - I would like more smoke. I have a few Lionel 8 ohm resistors. Could I use one of these?

2) Hopefully from the pics I will get some advice as to the possibility of plugging in a 9 volt battery to prevent the sound drop outs when I cycle ect. Can these boards acommodate this ?
