Another couple new-guy questions today.

My son who is 4 said he'd like a Diesel Amtrak set.  All he really knows about O-Gauge is that he loves the conventional Lionel "The Scout" that his grandfather bought him for his first christmas.  We set it up at Christmas and grandpa buys him one additional car a year for it.  We don't have the kind of disposable income that another train usually requires so I said "maybe someday".  However,  thanks to the great Buy/Sell board here I was able to sell a train I didn't need and fund this set. So far I know that what I've got is a batch of MPC Lionel with the A and B unit from the Lakeshore Limited line and the cars from the Silver Spike.

Question one.  What engines and cars are these based on?  Obviously they've been compressed for 0-27 compatibility but I assume they are derived from a prototype of some sort.

The pictures below are from the ad, but they arrived a couple days ago.  I'm very pleased and I know my son will be too.  For some reason I like the look of A/B  better than the A/A (as with the Silver Spike engines) and I think this set included all but one of the cars that were made for the Silver Spike line.

Question two. Which car am I missing? I'm content now, but I have a feeling that at some point I'll want the whole set!

1-You have all the AMTRAK cars I can find beginning with 16XXX.  Mine are a different series, 6403 through 6406, having a white background to the stripes.  So according to my book it seems that you have them all.

2-The B-unit does blend in better with passenger cars than the A-unit, doesn't it?

Have fun!

Thanks Grampstrains,

That's good to know. Is there a specific set of car models from the era or is it more of a generalization?  Really looking forward to getting these on some track.

TrainsRMe,

I think I found the missing car, it's 16023.  Here's a pic I found elsewhere:

The only listings I've found for it say 1990's though it seems to have the same stripes with the silver car color instead of a middle white stripe.  I may have to bid on it...

Yep, the B-unit keeps the profile nice and even.
