I have a couple of questions regarding this set.

According to the instructions it is recommended that the AA units run in a MU and in fact come from the factory preset as TR9. I kept it this way and although the headlights function properly there are no coupler sounds when the non-powered coupler is fired.

And, there is only one Tower announcement.

Are these correct?

Thanks

Mike

This was an early Scale Odyssey engine. It has Railsounds 4 so only Tower Com is intelligible. That is normal. I would suggest reprograming these separately with unique ID numbers and the proper feature code Aux1 8. Program the non powered unit with a different ID but the same way. Then build your lashup using the TR key. That should restore the coupler sound and open the front coupler on the rear engine.

Mike, yes, right after you hit Eng xx Set, you then hit Aux1 followed by 8.

That is the feature code that tells the radio board its in a Diesel with Smoke.

For the dummy hit Eng yy Set. You can hit Aux1 8 also as the dummy has smoke as well.

The reason for using a different ID for the dummy is so you can program it as running backward when building your lashup. If it had the same number they would try to go in opposite directions assuming they were coupled end to end.

Maybe there is no sound with the dummy unit coupler? Went to the Lionel website and from the manual, which shows a Cab-1, it reads:

Front coupler button image: "Front coupler releases. Coupler release sounds, powered unit only."

Rear Coupler button image: "Rear coupler releases. Coupler release sounds, powered unit only."

Is it possible the uncoupling sound is only generated for the lead unit button pushes and as TR9 it does not generate the sound when you activate the dummy unit front coupler?

Both Units smoke. Nice crawl speeds. Only thing was the zombie lighting in the cabs. so I cut the cab lights and they are way better. You can close couple them easily, and there is a simple trick to drop the high riding cabs.  Wish there was sound in one of the dummy B's though... love the flags too.

These have magna traction as well so they tend to pick up lost of stray metal objects in their gears. So check them frequently.

Here are the four units from an internet shot that I could find.  I will have to get mine out and take them around the layout again.

Thanks for the tip I didn't think they had Magnetraction. They are a nice looking set.

A "B" unit is on the horizon, I prefer a powered unit so all three "smoke" but I'll see how it goes. You're not kidding about those cab lights, I painted them with Testors Amber Yellow hoping that would tone them down but now they're just really bright yellow lights. I'll have to do something else with them.
