Really Missing my Legacy Cab2 while it's in for repairs

Guests find them much easier to hold and use. While it doesn't have all the features, it has never failed

I would just pick up another used 990 for times like this.

My cab-2 and base was fixed and waiting to get it back. Figure it was about a 3 week turnaround which is acceptable given the fact that Lionel may be flooded with repairs. 

Received an automated Fed Ex message today with the tracking number for a package coming from Concord, NC requiring a signature.

   I agree I appreciate Lionel repairing my Legacy very very much, and by the way Lionel now uses FEDEX not UPS.  Which is great by me.

Dave, For the price difference. I would pick up another 990 rather than a 993. That way you have a spare Legacy base.

I have kept my old cab1 and TMCC base as a backup. When my Legacy set was in for repair I ran trains via the DCS remote using the MTH TIU to TMCC base link cable.

I thought of that after I bought my 993 as well.

A second 990 is the way I'd go.  Keep a current database backup and if needed dump it to the backup.

   I agree about getting a 2nd 990 Legacy, however if you notice in the prior post what cost I maybe able to pick the 993 Legacy up for, it changes the thought pattern.  Heck for $200.00 I can hardly purchase a TMCC Cab1L & Base.  If I could get a 990 Legacy for $200.00 that would be a completely different story.  However I will continue to look for a 990 Legacy, the minimum I have seen is $314.00 Plus $18.00 shipping.  Still over $100.00 more than picking up the 993 Legacy unit.  Of Course adding the TMCC Cab1L & Base in on top of the 993 Unit,  then puts the 2nd 990 Legacy back into the running cost wise.  If I can pick up a Cab1L and base used for a decent price the 993 and the Ca1L & Base then would make sense.

Looking at some approx. prices (not incl. shipping):

Cab 1L - $115

Cab 1L with base - $190

993 - $220

990- $315

The Cab 1L has gotten good reviews on the Forum. Seemingly it's more robust than the Cab 2, probably to be expected since it has less to go wrong.

Does the Cab 1L have "detents" like the Cab2, or does the knob rotate smoothly with no resistance?  I always felt like the original Cab1 was extremely vague and unsatisfying.

   It is my understanding that you must have a Cab1L Base unit to interface and operate with the Legacy Base, so I would need both the Cab1L and Base Unit @ $190.00 Plus shipping.  We are now over $200.00 or approx the same cost as the 993 Legacy unit.

If this is the case I might as well just purchase another 990 Legacy as a Back up.  The key I guess is finding a cheap used Cab1L & Base unit, and then purchasing the 993 Legacy unit.

You do not need the Cab1L base if you have a Legacy base since the Cab1L works with the Legacy base just fine. i use this combo at shows all the time.

   Thanks buddy not ever owning one, I did not know the Cab1L was a stand alone with the 990 Legacy base.  That means I could pick up a Cab1L for the $115.00, however if the Legacy goes in for repairs again, I will be right back to where I am now, without the 990 Legacy Base the Cab1L & the 993 Legacy do not function 

In reality I should forget about the 993 Legacy, and just pick up a Cab1L & Base, for the $190.00.  In this manner I can run my Legacy Engines in TMCC mode, and still operate my FTCC Switches, while the 990 legacy is in for repairs.  Does that make engineering sense?

One more question, will the Cab1L and Base run my upgraded 249ERR?  Or is this something only the Cab2 will do.

Can you control Legacy engines with the Cab 1 L base thru DCS?

I would think that if you were to run in TMCC mode only, you could just use the old cab 1 base? (with DCS)

or is there a difference using the cab 1 L?

  That is a good question, I do not have the experience with TMCC to be able to answer your question either.

It’s my understanding that you could use DCS to control Legacy engines in Legacy mode but not with the DCS remote. You need the WIU and the full DCS App. And a Legacy base. I would think the Base 1L should work as well. Not tried it myself as I haven’t got a WIU yet.

   Thanks for the info buddy, however I never intend to run thru the WiFi.  Waited all my life to run my Tin Plate Trains with a HHRC.  I think the DCS & Legacy HHRC's are fantastic technology and we do not need no Stinking Phones to run our O Gauge Trains!
