I ordered Lionel's PS4 REA flat car & trailers (6-27067) some time back and had actually forgotten about it when my LHS called last week and said it had come in.  I recall now I loved the idea because it was modeled after a prototype for 1952, supposedly - and I try to make my layout very 1955ish.

Anyway, this is just a splendid bit of roling stock.  Very heavy - lots of metal.  And detail, with moving frameowkrs to hold the front of the trailer, etc (they are metal, too, not plastic.  I love it.  As shown in the photos, I have made one adjustment.  It was delivered with one of the unloading ramps on each end.  I moved one so that both are on the same end: not sure if one at each end is prototypical but I like the look this way a lot more.

I originally order this with the idea of converting at least one of the trailers to superstreets to pull behind one on my tractors, and I still might, but not if I can't find a way it can go back on this trailer.  it really is lovely.

Lee, enjoy your new purchase.  These are fabulous cars!

I've been collecting these for quite some time to make a nice 1950's-era "intermodal" train to complement today's more modern container trains.  There are also C&O flatcars with white REA trailers that were done a few years back.  But the green ones look sharp!

Several of the larger train stores still have a varied selection of the earlier Standard O PS-4 flatcars w/piggybacks.  For a few years (2005-2008), some were available as singles along with two-packs.  The more reasonable dealers have kept the prices as they were when each item hit the streets, so you can see how prices have crept up with each production run.  Other dealers have increased prices on all their stock across the board to match the higher prices of the most recent issues.

Are you planning to purchase the CN piggyback set due out in mid-2013?

Coincidentally, we picked up one of these in Cincti yesterday..... we have the early car with the sliver REA trailers and then the two pack from years ago..... would make a nice, short train..... there was a guy at York next to JDs Trains selling ramps for these and I failed to get one - got too excited about JD having an Atlas O F in GM&O I forgot about the ramps.... hopefully still there this Spring.... BTW, Dixie Union Station had the car with the silver trailers if you're looking for it too....

Lee....glad you like your purchase.  These are absolutely beautifully done pieces and I have quite a few of them now.  OH...by the way, the unloading ramps on each end is prototypical.  The ramps would be lowered so that an entire train of flats could be unloaded at one end.  The truck would start unloading by backing up a ramp from the ground to the end of the first flatcar and then continue to bring down trailer after trailer using the flatcar ramps as bridges per se between the cars....
