Hi Jeff, I have 4 sets of K-Line Alcos and I have never noticed any waves in the shells. My sets were all purchased new so I know how they were stored over the years.
I have a pair of PRR Alcos- straight as an arrow.

Looks like the shells got really warm.
If the Shells were on display in sunlight, the exposed side can warp do to heat & UV.
Old hobby shops with big front windows often had damaged to display items and those in window type boxes.
Faded cardboard boxes are seen at swap meets all the time.
I now always check for warping on used models, I was "burned" recently on a $15 boxed Darpol LMS HO loco with hidden sun damage and warping.
Now I just claim it was in a train wreak and badly repaired by the roundhouse crew.
I have 12 of them and the only thing I have noticed is that there is a very slight indentation where the screw stanchions are located on a few of them. Nothing like what you have posted here.
