Recessed light spacing

My ceiling is approximately 8' high. I went with a 4' x 6' light fixture spacing. Gave me plenty of light. Mine are on dimmers so I can decrease the amount of light if I want. Will also matter what wattage and lumens your lights are rated for. Try and keep your lights 3' to 4' max. from walls so enough light covers the walls.

I have a 12' wide space, that has 3 - 6 inch can lights in it.  It lights it up very nicely.  My theory was, you can never have enough lighting.  In the entire room, which is 20 x 12, there is a total of 12 lights.

In one of my layout books there’s a suggestion of lights to be spaced - as far apart as - the distance from the light source - to your layout surface.   And what he said : more light than you think you need.
Jim Barrett observed scenery, etc really soaks up the light. Good luck !
