Wondering if there's an on-line site or a book that explains all aspects of electrically related aspects for O gauge model railroading? I know electrical stuff is my weak point. And it seems I'm on here a lot asking electrical questions. While I appreciate all the help, would be good if I also had a good source to consult. For instance, my latest challenge is making sure I have things set up right so I can ensure my operating boxcars function. I understand the concept of electrically isolating the outer rail for working accessories that are wired to that track. When the train enters that section of track it completes the circuit and provides power to the connected operating accessory. But not exactly sure I understand how that concept works in relation to an operating box car (I have some Christmas cars with doors that open with a waving Santa). And not sure of all steps to get an operating boxcar to work. I'm using Atlas O wired to DCS and soon Legacy. thanks for any advice and recommendations. Peter

I agree with Trainroom Gary there is no better wiring manual than the one stated above
Trainroomgary - I own that book and think it's great. As much as I like this book, I find it does have some (minor) gaps. for instance, it doesn't address my question above or provide guidance on how to get an operating boxcar to work. thanks.
Yes, it's a great book. But be aware that they have just released the second edition of this book...more info, up-to-date...sku 10-8405, $21.95... (The cover shown in the response above is the first edition.)
(Of course, if you're like me, you end up hanging on to the old book, too!! There's just something about having a well-worn book that's shows it's frequent use. It's 'an old friend'...like a soft shoe. Wrinkled soft cover, tattered pages, maybe a coffee stain or grease smudge or two, highlighted pithy passages, dog-eared page corners....sort of like my Bible.)
Have a great day!

Peter, to address your question about your operating boxcar and operating cars in general, there is no special wiring needed. An uncoupling/operating track and controller is all that is needed. The wiring of the controller to the track is in the instructions included with the track when purchased. The operating car must be stationary over the operating track for it to be activated. The insulated track wiring is only for operating accessories, not operating cars.

I have the one mentioned above, but I think like this one a little better: Wiring Your Toy Train Layout by Peter Riddle. I found this one a bit easier to read and understand after I got re-started a couple years ago. Might not be a bad idea to get both.

TrainLarry - thanks! I knew I was missing something.
Rtr12 and everyone with book suggestions - thank you too. As I said, I have the first recommended book. Will get the other too. Can't hurt. Peter.
