My wife and I are planning a trip to Hamburg Germany to visit Miniature Wunderland prior to embarking on a Rhine river cruise. Although time limited, I am looking for recommendations for train stores. I am especially interested in collectible older vintage trains. Any help most appreciated!

We went to Hamburg last October to visit the Miniature Wunderland model railway. You won’t be disappointed, it is fantastic. Plan to get there early as it can get busy, we pre-booked tickets before we went just in case they turned us away by being full but as it turned out it was OK. We spent nearly five hours there, you could easily spend more as there is so much to see.

With regards to model shops we didn’t see any, but then I wasn’t actively looking as ‘management’ wanted to spend time girly shopping.

Some 15 years ago there still was one of the most interesting trains-shops in Europe in the centre of Hamburg: M&L (Markscheffel & Lennartz). Now there are a couple of shops that sell current European model-railroad items but no collectible older vintage trains (these are generally not found in Europe in shops but at swap-meets or via the internet). To find the model-railroad shops in Hamburg just Google "modellbahnladen hamburg". The last time I went to Hamburg I even did not go to any of these shops. The railroad station of Hamburg is worth a look:

In the Museum of the history of Hamburg (https://www.hamburgmuseum.de/d.../modelleisenbahn.htm) there is a very large and interesting Gauge 1 layout with tens of long trains running around.

Regards

Fred
