I have a number of 2 rail red caboose flat cars that I need to convert from two rail to three. Should I replace the trucks or are there wheel sets that can be slipped in. Any suggestions would be appreciated as well what type to purchase. Thanks

Try Lionel wheels. They worked on a weaver 2 rail truck for me.
The problem will be, after installing 3-Rail/Hi-Rail wheel sets, the car will probably have to be raised in order for the "big flanges" to clear the underside of the car.

That is an easy fix just add a washer.

Well, yes but probably more than one washer, and then the car rides too high. Been there, done that. Finally stayed with the 2-Rail trucks & wheel sets.

Not necessarily. Case by case. I also have "been there, done that". Indeed, I have seldom found this clearance issue to exist - though it does happen. Get some Hi-rail wheels (eBay, for example) and have a go at it.
40's - 50's cast/wooden flat car, original 2-rail trucks, new hi-rail wheels (these are plastic) and a new Keil-Line hi-rail dummy coupler in the original coupler pocket. Real old-school, fun stuff.

I just finished converting 3 max grey flats. Weaver trucks with one 1/8 thick washer that did the trick. Just enough to clear the flanges.
Thanks for the information. Does anyone have suggestion on buying some 3 rail trucks without couplers. Its one thing to have large wheel flanges but never lobster claw couplers. Plus are there wheel sets available that may fit?
