Trying to figure out the difference. Appreciate any pics or info in helping me make a decision. I am having a hard time seeing the different shades of red. Which red would be more versatile with diff cars.
Thanks,
Bob

I'm not able to post a photo. The crackle finish would be more of a low sheen. Where the Red Comet's paint is a typical high gloss. I would go with the high gloss red. It would be a better match to other tinplate. I hope this helps.
I suggest the best way to enjoy the crackle red 400E would be with the crackle freight cars that compliment the locomotive. You will find these cars cataloged with the crackle red 400E.
Thanks for the quick responses. Still trying to decide.

Get the freight cars and fill them up with..................
Make sure you bring it over fully loaded
I have the red and it' beautiful shiny red whereas the crackle would be a duller finish but just as nice as the black crackle paint with the crackle paint freight cars a first!
I used to have a black crackle version, it is nice, but if you are liking the taste of shiny tinplate I do not recommend this engine, it is too dull , I perfer the shiny hi gloss paint, it looks alot better and when you have a well lighted layout in the dark the tinplate looks 100% better.
Go Red, I think you would be more happy with it.
I have a lot of tinplate trains and I find I'm really liking the crackle versions as a nice change of pace. I guess if I didn't have a lot to look at I might have a different opinion. Another nice thing about the crackle paint is that you can handle the train without leaving a bunch of finger prints.
John.
Steve, you are Kracking me up.

Steve, I use swifter pads to dust with, and they seem to do a good job of lifting the dust out of the crackle texture, they have something in them that attracts the dust. It is a "rough" finish though, so you have to be careful about leaving stray fibers behind from the swifter pad. What John said about not leaving fingerprints is definitely true.
it's just a very different finish than the high gloss, apples and oranges.
wurlitzer, thanks for pointing out the freight set. I'd seen that page in the catalog and noted the crackle red 400 but didn't read the fine print and missed that the 200 series freights were all crackle as well. that's really something new and a great idea, that would be a very cool set with a difference.
Thanks for the input. Maybe someone will post a few pics. I am leaning to the shiny red, but wish I could see one in person.

Haven't the crackle finish freight cars 11-30184, etc from 2014 Tinplate catalog been cancelled?
Then the MTH website is wrong since all of the cars in 2014 LCT catalog with crackle finish say "Canceled".
The 400e red crackle engine and cars have all been canceled.

Guess that will make it easier for Bob to decide

Bob..
Go for it! The killer is adding the passenger cars $$$$$$$. I wish the comet engines matched up nicely with the 200 series freight cars. I have yet to pick up the passenger cars. School supplies and clothes for my three daughters for the new school year has to come first.

The crackle red 400E and the 200 series crackle freight cars are NOT cancelled, permanently. Initial order quantities for these were very good. MTH is actively looking for a supplier of the crackle paint process and until they find one, production of crackle paint items are delayed.
Wurlitzer,
Probably a good idea for MTH to change the information on shipping schedule to say "TBD" rather than "canceled".
