Red terminal on small postwar Lionel transformers?

Today at York I bought two 45-watt postwar Lionel transformers to use with operating accessories. The one with the red terminal is a 1025, and the other is a 1015. Are there internal differences? I noticed that this 1025 has raised lettering under that terminal that reads "CONTROL." I've always wondered about these.

If you push down on the red cap, it will interrupt the circuit to reverse the engine. I believe the one with the red cap also has an internal circuit breaker.
