I know this question has been asked before. What do you use to remove just the white lettering and not mess up the black paint on a steamer tender shell?
There's no method guaranteed to NOT harm the paint under the lettering. I've used 92% alcohol on some....but it does not work on all. I have also sanded the lettering off with a ultra fine sanding stick.......and used lacquer thinner.....but all of these involve risk.
I've had luck using Testors Easy Lift Off. Its a slow acting paint remover. Follow the directions and apply to the lettering witha fine brush. I've also used an electric erasure that draftsmen used to use on mylar reproducible drawings. It worked well but polished the black paint under the lettering. The color wasn't damaged but the finish was differnt than the surrounding paint. The new decals kind of hid the sheen.
I was initially told to use alcohol, didn't do squat on the lettering that I wanted to remove on my New RMT Madison Cars. Another forumite said to try Scalecoat II Wash Away and it was fantastic!
I applied a little on a q-tip and let it set for 45-60 seconds and it lifted the lettering off without effecting the new paint!
I cannot and will not use anything use for this function, it is great!
