Renumbering and relettering Lionel diesels?

Please keep us in the loop as to how it works!

 

I've had some RS-11s renumbered in the past and this would save time, and my money, as I wouldn't have to farm it out to a professional...

 

Who am I kidding, I'm all thumbs!  I'll still send it out!

So this didn't work at all on my Lionel S4. I'm pretty sure that they use a mask and just paint the letters and numbers on there because I did exactly what the video shows and no dice. Looks like a full strip/repaint if I want to change it. At least I know now

Might I offer the assistance of a few friends of mine... I was able to get fantastic results by enlisting the help of Jeff Sohn and David Long... Here is the renumbered 8006, with a factory painted 8010...

 

 

 

Might I suggest taping off the cab side and using IPA and/or wet sanding to remove the factory lettering (and I'm sure some of the paint as well), and then using the corners as a natural tape break, repainting it with the matching color.  I have NYC black if they are NYC or PC...

 

 

I took my unit down to the local auto paint store and had them use their fancy-schmancy computer match the paint formulation and it's dead spot on (for my units anyway). They put it is a spray can for me, as well.  I touched up the roof of my GP30 this way...

 

If you need a good paint shop, let me know... I used Genesee Paint in Utica, NY.

 

I plan to dull coat them as well.

Hi Mario,

 

I can see how that would work well for changing numbers. I was actually going to remove the RR name/logo and put on fantasy decals so it would probably be easier to just strip and repaint.

 

BTW, I need to get some scale coupler mounts from you. Are you printing yet?

Try the magic eraser. SIRT uses that with excellent results for removing lettering and numbers.

They matched the paint ..... then put it into a rattle can for you? I didn't know they could do that.

That's exactly what they did, twice for me... Once for Lionel WP orange and now for Lionel NYC black.  Both color and sheen!
