I ordered parts from the Lionel replacement parts in Ohio.. for a defective operating gear box on my new Lionel 6-37996 192 operating control tower.

The following parts fixed it 6204153045 Drive Shaft w/cplg-contr twr  **** and part# 6204153145 gearbox assy/control tower

I bought the gear box because the part on mine that went bad  was I thought only need was the  drive shaft turns out the  original gear box had some issues.. But I only need the top plastic cover with gears  so the green bottom box still looks original .. Because the top part is under the men and can not be seen.. now the men are quiet  smooth and back to work as they should!

the drive shaft was only  .75 gear box was 3.00 shipping 9.00 glad they had them if your men sound or run bad this is what you might need .. DANiel

Yes the Men rotate in a very realistic speed. and very quite , this  newer  version  has been around for sometime .. If you look at the towers and see Three metal rods going up .. that will show you you have the new version of the slot car motor type  motor... the other type (only two rods going to tower)  had the vibrator motor with the round washer with fingers to rotate.. This unit (new version ) is to me very realistic.. and a much appreciated version....DAniel

Same issue with 192 tower that I got for Christmas.  The box just hums.  I opened it up and put it back together a little looser and now I can hear the drive hit the roof of the gear box inside, but the gear is now turning.  The turning is rough and sporadic and the men are going in the wrong direction.  I did not see anything wrong inside the gear box other than something is rubbing against the lid.

Need advice.  Does this sound like your issue and possibly repairable?  Or should I send it back?  My dealer has a unit he can exchange, but I will have to pay for shipping which is more than the parts that you listed.

When I got the new gear I noticed that its was centered on the shaft  the old one was installed too close to the end which made it impossible to turn  smoothly, And as mentioned had  a  split in-between the gear....

If I was you I would  take the roof off, the rotating men (gray part) then the clear glass part  and run it If bad recheck what I mentioned..  I also lubed the plastic gears (inside and under men) with grease, they where bone dry from China... Good -Luck
