This question is for you Lionel Postwar repair experts.

I have a 3444 Hobo and Cop Car with wiring that needs replacing.  The wires in mention are ones that are soldered from the electrical contacts on the trucks to the wire that operates the animation device

What gauge wire would I need to replace the old wiring?

Best recommendations would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Your best bet would be to get some of the specialty wire that many parts dealers sell for repairing Lionel and American Flyer trains. It is made using a flexible insulation and a large number of fine wires to get the correct gauge.
I'd go with type SW22 - which is 22 gauge.

I buy all my wire by the spool. Train Tender gets $22 for 100' spool.

The Train Tender also has it available by the foot:

SW-22black super flex wire #22 gauge/ft0.30
