I want to start using my 3rd Rail B&O Big Six as a pusher, so the scale coupler that came with it won't work. Anyone ever replaced this before? Is there a coupler option out there that will mount correctly and fit through the small opening without modification?

Here's what I'm working with... obviously the dummy coupler I ordered won't workIMG_1273

Sometimes, 3rd Rail included a Lionel-compatible dummy coupler with the locomotive.  If not, I've had good luck using Selley couplers that Bowser sells (or at least used to sell).  These are white metal castings with small drawbars that fit well in the scale coupler pockets.  You trim them to length and drill a hole for the mounting screw to pass through.

Here is one on a 3rd Rail PRR 2-10-2.

I have many more of these couplers than I'll ever use, so send me an e-mail (address in my profile) with your mailing address and I'll send you a couple.

Yes - Selley couplers are handy with many 2R pieces - like rolling stock - that only need 3R couplers, but have trucks/wheels that can live in the 3RO world. They fit in scale O coupler pockets.

I have gotten them randomly on eBay; different brands, I guess, as some were zinc, some were "soft metal" (but hard enough), and some were brass.

I just went through this was a Sunset boxcar. Doesn't look as near as good on Lionel trucks as it did before. I didn't think about finding a coupler that would just fit in the pocket. Thanks
